The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD) is a Public Charity designated under the U.S. IRS code 501(c)(3). We are a nonprofit education and research organization dedicated to informing, assisting, and supporting people affected by gastrointestinal (GI) disorders.
Founded in 1991, we work with patients, families, physicians, nurses, practitioners, investigators, regulators, employers, and others to improve digestive health in the adults and children.
Working for people affected by IBS
Here is a timeline highlighting just some of our efforts on behalf of the IAMIBS community.
- 1993 created the 1st physician-delivered education curriculum for the public on IBS.
- 1995 launched our toll-free Call Center to answer questions and provide useful information.
- 1997 designated the month of April as IBS Awareness Month.
- 1998 created the aboutIBS.org web site.
- 1999 produced the first Public Service Announcement (PSA) about IBS for television.
- 2002 launched "IBS: A Call to Action" to facilitate Congressional action on behalf of IBS sufferers.
- 2002 conducted and published "IBS in the Real World Survey."
- 2003 awarded 7 IFFGD Research Awards.
- 2004 published and distributed a "Reporter's Guide to IBS."
- 2005 awarded 6 IFFGD Research Awards.
- 2007 awarded 6 IFFGD Research Awards.
- 2008 awarded 5 IFFGD Research Grants.
- 2009 published results from a study we conducted, along with the University of North Carolina, looking at "IBS Patients: Their Illness Experience and Unmet Needs."
- 2009 awarded 5 IFFGD Research Awards
- 2009 created the iamibs.org web site.
