Facts about IBS

It's amazing how little is known, by so many people, about IBS. It's one of the most common ailments being reported by patients around the globe. It may not be life-threatening, but it can cause those who have it a world of hurt - pain, discomfort, inconvenience, disability, embarrassment, and expense.

  • Between 30 and 45 million people have IBS in the United States alone (10% to 15% of the population).
  • Worldwide it's estimated that between 1 in 10 and nearly 1 in 4 people (9% to 23% of populations) have IBS.
  • Both women and men get IBS. And it strikes people of all ages, even children. Symptoms often are first recognized in young adults. Most persons with IBS are under the age of 50, but many older adults suffer as well.
  • The exact cause of IBS is not known. Symptoms seem to happen because of a problem with the way the gut, brain and nerves interact. The result is changes in normal bowel movement and sensation.
  • The impact of IBS on a person can range from mild inconvenience to disability.
  • IBS is unpredictable. Symptoms vary and can change over time.
  • There are some treatments to help manage symptoms. For many, better treatments are needed.
  • IBS can only be diagnosed by a medical professional.
